Business people from across Taunton town centre will be attending
a special event next week to hear how a £2m plan could help boost
the area and fight off competition from neighbouring centres.
A special presentation is being held at the Brewhouse Theatre at 6pm
on May 2 to spell out details and costs of an exciting Action Plan,
as part of the town’s Business Improvement District (BID) campaign.
Hundreds of invitations have gone out to the event, and town centre
businesses will be voting at the end of June on whether Taunton will
become the first town of its size in the South West to become a BID.
If the vote is yes it would mean a small levy from town centre
businesses would raise £1,225,000 over five years,
|
with £750,000 additional money coming from other sources, to boost
the town.
The Action Plan, drawn up after consultations with business people,
will spell out all kinds of improvements including:
- A dedicated BID police team
- High profile events
- Night time taxi wardens
- Extra Christmas lights
- A variety of user-friendly signs and information
Successful BIDs are helping put life back into cities and towns
across England and Wales as part of a national initiative. Taunton
is the only town in the South West to go for BID status, like
Bristol and Plymouth.
