Heritage
Open Day celebrates England's architecture and culture
by allowing visitors free access to interesting
properties that are either not usually open, or would
normally charge an entrance fee. It includes tours,
events and activities that focus on local architecture
and culture. and mainly runs from September, with places all over England taking
part and Taunton’s Heritage Open Days is a fascinating
and enjoyable day out for discovering it's local heritage
and architecture. So why not take advantage of this
unique opportunity to explore and enjoy
these sometimes hidden, often curious and always
interesting places in Taunton - It's free!
Civic
society members, property owners, estate
managers, visitors, conservation officers, company
directors, parishioners, tourism managers, education
officers - people from all walks of life who care about
and take pride in the environment they live in make
Heritage Open Days happen. The scheme brings people and
places together and encourages you and thousands of
others to explore the buildings on Taunton's doorstep.
Follies, contemporary buildings,
churches, factories, tunnels, temples, offices, private
homes, industrial sites, castles, windmills, town halls
- guided walks, concerts, re-enactment, trails,
role-plays, children's activities - the variety of
places and ways to discover them are endless and all are
throughout the UK as well as in the Taunton Deane.
Heritage Open Days was established in
1994 as England's contribution to European Heritage
Days, in which 48 countries now participate. The capital
stages an independent event,
London Open
House, which takes place on a different weekend
in September.

English
Heritage, says: Heritage Open Days has become
an important part of the heritage calendar, allowing
everyone, wherever they live and whatever their
background, to enjoy, understand and feel a part of the
country's rich and diverse cultural heritage.
