Enjoy Taunton's Heritage, With Heritage Open Days

Heritage Open Day celebrates England's architecture and culture by allowing visitors free access to interesting properties that are either not usually open, or would normally charge an entrance fee. It includes tours, events and activities that focus on local architecture and culture. and mainly runs from September, with places all over England taking part and Taunton’s Heritage Open Days is a fascinating and enjoyable day out for discovering it's local heritage and architecture. So why not take advantage of this unique opportunity to explore and enjoy these sometimes hidden, often curious and always interesting places in Taunton - It's free!

Civic society members, property owners, estate managers, visitors, conservation officers, company directors, parishioners, tourism managers, education officers - people from all walks of life who care about and take pride in the environment they live in make Heritage Open Days happen. The scheme brings people and places together and encourages you and thousands of others to explore the buildings on Taunton's doorstep.

Follies, contemporary buildings, churches, factories, tunnels, temples, offices, private homes, industrial sites, castles, windmills, town halls - guided walks, concerts, re-enactment, trails, role-plays, children's activities - the variety of places and ways to discover them are endless and all are throughout the UK as well as in the Taunton Deane.

Heritage Open Days was established in 1994 as England's contribution to European Heritage Days, in which 48 countries now participate. The capital stages an independent event, London Open House, which takes place on a different weekend in September.

Dr Simon Thurley, Chief Executive, English Heritage, says: Heritage Open Days has become an important part of the heritage calendar, allowing everyone, wherever they live and whatever their background, to enjoy, understand and feel a part of the country's rich and diverse cultural heritage.

If your a resident why not take advantage and discover more about your local heritage. If you are tourist why not get a taste of old England and see what other tourist don't usually get to see.
