Enjoy Taunton in Natures Colour At the Best Flower Show in the South West !

Whether you love flowers and gardening or not the Taunton Flower Show offers a diverse range of exhibits, stalls, activities, arts, traders, crafts, entertainment, displays and much, much more. But that's only one reason why you should come to Taunton Flower Show. The other is that it is situated in the glorious Victorian grounds of Vivary Park; in the heart of Taunton Town Centre.

Known by many as the Chelsea of the South West, the flower show opens its gates each year to offer residents, visitors and tourist a great day out with over 100 craft stands outside and many floral trade stands inside. There are competition marquee's; some which house many demonstrations throughout the two days; there is an arena for entertainment and even events organized for children such as rides and puppet shows.

For the many growers from around the county and further it is a time of more serious thoughts and that is presenting to the judges and the public the very best of their expertise, work, traditions and innovations. Their dazzling displays, picture perfect blooms and fruit are just a few of the many categories you can view at that traditional Somerset pace.

If you do decide to pay the flower show a visit you will surely see a range of age groups enjoying what is on offer. Kids just love seeing the giant vegetables, fruits and blooms while the older kids love the bargains, expert knowledge and discovery of new plants and exhibits. There is entertainment in the centre of the show ranging from bands, dog trials, falconry and many other agricultural events that make the day that extra special.

Throughout the shows landscape you can stop for something to eat and drink and if you fancy something more substantial you will find many quality catering stands that offer the real taste of Somerset. Maybe you'd like to try some country cream fudge or even a pint of ale. Whatever, you'd like to do we guarantee that all your senses will be stimulated by the things you can do, see, buy, eat, drink and thoroughly enjoy.

For over 137 years the Taunton Deane Horticultural and Floricultural Society have organized the event and 2004 saw one of the best years ever and it promises to be even better. The flower show really is a great day out for shoppers and gardeners alike and is real value for money. We recommend and invite everyone to join us next year for an even bigger and better event.

We look forward to seeing you there!

A Brief History of Vivary Park - The Venue of Taunton Flower Show

The land that Vivary Park now lies on was once the fish farm or vivarium for the priory and castle in medieval times and even though the vivarium no longer exists the lands history carries on in the name 'Vivary'.

Since 1851 the park has been the venue for the public events and the annual town flower show.  These events were permitted by the owners of the parkland, the Kinglake family then many years later in 1894 Taunton Deane Borough Council purchased the land (including the tennis courts and pavilion) from the Kinglake family.

The purchase of the land for Vivary Park was completed by 13 December 1894 for the sum of £3,659 (around £230,000 today). Early the following year designs were prepared together with cost estimates amounting £5,698 (around £360,000 today).

The park was laid out in 1895. The front gates and the bandstand and one shelter date from this time. In 1902 an oak tree was planted close to the bandstand to mark the coronation of Edward VII. With funds left over from the celebrations, the fountain was commissioned as a memorial to the late Queen Victoria. It was unveiled in 1907. The war memorial dates from 1922 with a formal garden centred around it with post and chain ivy swags and seats placed in the bays of the semi circular path.  In 1927 the putting green was laid out and in 1928 the golf course opened. The boating pond and the National Rose Society Provincial Trial Ground around the war memorial were added in the 1960s. The model railway track was added in 1979 and the playground next to the tennis courts in 1980.
